BJJ Back Mount Drilling

Is probably the most fun you’ve had since you were a little kid. Or at least since the last time you played Super Smash Brothers on the N64.

A little while ago, Jason (Science of Skill reader) asked SPECIFICALLY about using deliberate practice concepts in BJJ training – very good question.

The idea is that you need to specifically design each and every training session to improve a pivotal element of your performance. “Drill Building” is an art for this very reason – MAXIMIZING mat time. Not enough of us do it consistently. Here’s a back mount drill I know and love and still use with my students:

You’ll notice this is significantly different than the “flow drilling” that most people talk about. There is a place for the lighter stuff, but this is a hard, fast, aggressive, continuous drill focusing on a few key skills. The good new is, you can do this with nearly ANY position or ANY technique sequence.

Check out this YouTube series I am releasing on maximizing your matt time in BJJ!

Awesome question Jason.

Also – if you’ve built some awesome drills that you want to share, reply and send in an email to info@scienceofskill.com!

All the best, and Get Good FAST!
